Common questions

Egg donation FAQ.

How are egg donors screened?

Multi-layer screening before a donor enters our active pool: medical workup (full physical, hormonal panel, infectious disease testing), genetic carrier screening, psychological evaluation by a licensed mental health professional, family medical history review (3 generations), and cycle clearance at the partner IVF clinic. Screening is rigorous — only a small fraction of applicants pass.

Can I choose a donor based on specific traits?

Yes. Filter by ethnicity, education level, height, eye and hair color, blood type, age, languages spoken, and more. Each donor profile includes anonymized photos as an adult and child, family medical history, education and career background, personal essay, and motivation for donating. Your coordinator can help narrow the pool to candidates that fit your priorities.

Are donors anonymous or known?

Both options are available. Open ID donors agree that the resulting child has the right to contact the donor at age 18 if the child wishes. Anonymous donors are fully confidential — no contact possible. Both options have ethical and practical considerations; we walk through both during your intake call so you can decide what's right for your family.

What's the legal protection for egg donation in California?

California has comprehensive case law and statutes establishing parental rights in donor situations. The egg donor relinquishes all parental claims at retrieval through a signed donor agreement. Intended parents are recognized as the sole legal parents from embryo creation. If used with a gestational carrier, a Pre-Birth Order can be obtained naming the intended parents on the birth certificate from day one. Independent legal counsel is provided for both donor and intended parents — never the same attorney.

What about compensation and confidentiality for donors?

Donor compensation is structured through escrow with payments at agreed milestones (amount specified in donor contract — not published publicly to protect negotiating room). All medical, travel, and psychological support costs are fully covered by intended parents. Confidentiality is strict — donor identity is protected unless donor and recipient mutually elect open ID at the outset.
