Estimate your surrogacy investment

Surrogacy in California typically runs $170,000-$230,000 all-in. Below is the same line-item breakdown we walk every family through during their consultation — no hidden fees, no surprises. A personalized estimate is one short call away.

The total range, in plain English

About 70% of journeys land in the $185k-$210k mid-range. The wider band reflects real variables — first-time vs. experienced surrogate, singleton vs. twins, IVF clinic and protocol, surrogate's home state.

$170k - $230k

Typical all-in cost for a California gestational surrogacy journey, embryo to baby home.

Where every dollar goes

Every CBS journey is broken down into six categories before you sign. Ranges shown are typical 2026 figures — your consultation will produce a personalized estimate.

Surrogate compensation
$65k - $145k

Base compensation, milestone bonuses, monthly allowance, maternity clothing, and twin/multiples bonus if applicable. Separately, surrogates also receive $500k life insurance, comprehensive health insurance, and full travel/childcare reimbursement.

Agency fees
$35k - $45k

Flat fee — not a percentage. Covers surrogate recruitment and screening, matching, contract management, 24/7 support, escrow oversight, and post-birth coordination for 14-22 months.

Legal fees
$12k - $18k

Separate attorneys for intended parents and the surrogate (no conflicts of interest). Covers the Gestational Surrogacy Agreement, pre-birth order petition, post-birth coordination, court filing fees, and apostille for international IPs.

Medical & IVF
$25k - $55k

Base IVF cycle (transfer of existing embryos): $25k-$35k. Egg retrieval + embryo creation adds $20k-$35k. Optional add-ons: PGT-A genetic testing, additional embryo transfers, donor egg if needed.

Insurance & escrow
$17k - $34k

$500k life insurance for the surrogate ($800-$1,500), pregnancy health insurance ($15k-$30k), and an independent third-party escrow management fee ($1,500-$2,500) that protects both parties.

Contingency reserve
$15k - $20k

Recommended safety margin for unforeseen events (additional transfer cycles, NICU stays, c-section, twin bonus). If unused, it's returned to you at journey end — your safety net, not a hidden fee.

What different journeys actually cost

Three realistic scenarios — not best-case, not worst-case. Your situation will land somewhere on this spectrum.

First-time surrogate, singleton

~$175k - $195k

Most common scenario. Standard IVF cycle, embryos already created, no twin bonus. Lower end if you use an existing IVF clinic and no PGT-A.

Experienced surrogate, singleton

~$195k - $215k

Returning surrogates earn $10k-$25k more in base compensation. Often worth it for faster matching and proven track record.

Twin pregnancy

~$200k - $230k

Add $5k-$10k twin bonus plus higher medical risk premiums. Some intended parents elect for twins; others see them as a surprise after dual-embryo transfer.
